The Secretary-General of the Authority engages the African Group in strengthening ocean governance and blue economy cooperation

On 27 February 2025, the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (the Authority), Ms. Leticia Carvalho, participated in a high-level virtual meeting with members of the African Group. The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the growing engagement of African Member States in ocean governance and the sustainable use of marine resources.

BGR opens consultation period for Eureka III EIS and announces webinars for public engagement

As an update to the announcement from 17 January 2025 on the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources’ (BGR) plans for the stakeholder consultations for environmental impact statement (EIS) on AI-controlled nodule harvester testing in the eastern BGR contract area, the BGR is pleased to announce the opening of the consultation period for the EIS regarding the planned testing of Eureka III in early 2026.

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), an exploration contractor sponsored by the Government of Germany, has announced the upcoming stakeholder consultations within the framework of an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the small-scale testing of an advanced AI-controlled nodule harvester in the eastern BGR contract area, located in the Clarion- Clipperton Zone of the northeast Pacific. BGR is responsible for planning, organizing and executing the environmental monitoring and assessment programme as part of its exploration activities and obligations.

Kingston, Jamaica – The Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), Ms. Leticia Carvalho, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, the Honorable Mrs. Kamina Johnson-Smith, at the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in Kingston, Jamaica on 15 January 2025.
In welcoming the Secretary-General to Jamaica, Minister Johnson-Smith congratulated Ms. Carvalho on her election as the first woman, oceanographer and national of the Latin-American and Caribbean region to be elected to the position during the thirty-year history of the ISA.
