The Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) finalized on 13 April 2021 the selection of candidates for three training opportunities offered by Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (GSR) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contracts for polymetallic nodules with ISA.

While three placements were initially offered, GSR agreed to exceptionally sponsor two candidates for the Master’s degree Ocean & Lakes instead of one, going beyond the requirements of its contract. This brings the total number of training opportunities offered since 1994 through the Contractor Training Programme to 225, including 42 opportunities since 2020.

Four candidates will benefit from the training opportunities sponsored by GSR for the year 2021:

Master’s degree Ocean & Lakes

  • Ms. Maria Camila León Duque from Colombia
  • Ms. Amina Ochora Makori from Kenya

Both candidates will benefit from a two-year fellowship for a Master’s degree of Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management jointly organized by the Faculty of Science of the Free University of Brussels, Antwerp University and Ghent University.

Master’s EMerald Programme

  • Ms. Iyani Inumi S. Muthukuda Arachchige from Sri Lanka

Ms. Muthukuda Arachchige will receive a two-year fellowship for an EMerald Master Programme commencing September 2021 with completion in June 2023 organised by University of Liège (ULiège), University of Lorraine (UL), Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF).

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund practical training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA, including the participation of such personnel in all activities in the Area which are covered by the contract.

The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of exploration contracts signed with ISA.
