Applications are now open for two at-sea training opportunities for candidates from developing States Members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The placements are provided by Geosciences and Natural Resources of the Federal Republic of Germany (BGR), in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides with ISA.
ISA is calling for candidates with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in marine geophysics or equivalent. Successful candidates will demonstrate proficiency with standard geophysical data processing techniques as well as a good command English.
The offshore exploration campaign in the BGR license area in the Indian Ocean is scheduled to take place in October 2021 for a period of 24 days. The selected trainees will participate in investigation of the subseafloor mineralization of selected hydrothermal systems applying diverse geophysical instruments. Trainees will also be invited to visit BGR offices in Hannover, Germany in spring/summer 2022 for a four-week post-cruise training during which they will apply 1D and 3D inversion modelling and contribute to interpreting the geophysical data collected during the exploration campaign.
BGR supports ISA’s Women in Deep-Sea Research project and, as such, strongly encourages qualified women to apply.
Please visit this link for more information and to apply. Applications by qualified candidates should be received no later than 25 June 2021.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA.
The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of contracts. Its purpose is to ensure that personnel from developing States are provided with appropriate operational expertise to enable them to participate in deep-seabed mining.
