The The International Seabed Authority (ISA) together with the Centre for Oceans Law and Policy, University of Virginia, School of Law will hold an international conference at the AC Marriot Hotel on the legal, scientific and economic aspects of deep seabed mining from 14 to 16 November in Kingston, Jamaica.
The conference will bring together high level government officials, international scholars and experts from the legal and scientific community, along with representatives of the diplomatic corps, to mark the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the establishment of ISA on 16 November 1994.
The opening session will feature remarks by the Secretary-General of ISA, Mr. Michael W. Lodge and Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, along with a keynote address by Judge Patrick Robinson of the International Court of Justice. This will be followed by a panel on the evolution of ISA since 1994, with expert perspectives that include the participation of Judge Albert Hoffman, President of the Seabed Disputes Chamber, of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
Over the two-days, seven additional expert panels will focus on topics related to the future of deep-sea mineral resources; the future exploitation of seabed minerals; sponsoring States and liability issues; the Caribbean and Part XI of UNCLOS, and innovative thinking in capacity building.
