H.E. Ambassador José Antonio Cabedo Espinoza presented his credentials to the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Chile to ISA, during a ceremony held in Kingston, Jamaica, on 13 March 2023.
Ambassador Cabedo is a career diplomat who joined the Foreign Service in 1988 and held various managerial and strategic planning positions in Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before this appointment, Ambassador Cabedo performed diplomatic and consular functions in Argentina, Japan, Jordan, Peru, Uruguay and the Latin American Integration Association. He is currently a Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission in Colombia. Ambassador Cabedo has undergraduate and graduate degrees in history and international studies.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Cabedo stressed that “Chile confirms the value given by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as the way forward agreed by the Parties and attaches great importance to the role ISA plays in the management of the resources in the Area within a robust process, governance and institutional framework to ensure the mandate of the Convention to protect the marine environment.”
“As the new Permanent Representative of Chile to ISA, I look forward to supporting the work of ISA and making active contributions to the work that we are doing,” he avowed.
Secretary-General Lodge welcomed Ambassador Cabedo as the new Permanent Representative of Chile to ISA. “I look forward to continuing working closely with Chile to advance the legal regime for the Area in compliance with UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement, as we move towards the sustainable development of seabed mineral resources for the benefit of all humanity,” he said.
