JAMAICA, Kingston (23 October 2017) – – The 15-year exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides was signed today, Monday 23 October in Warsaw, Poland by the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Michael Lodge in the presence of Mariusz Orion Jędrysek, Secretary of State, Chief National Geologist and Government Plenipotentiary for National Raw Materials Policy.
The exploration area is 10,000 km2 in size and lies within the limits of two large segments of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, located between the Hayes, Atlantis and Kane transforms faults/fracture zones. The area consists of 100 exploration blocks of 10 km2 each.
Poland is also one of the sponsoring States for Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM), another contractor with the Authority for the exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Zone since 2001.
