Today, the new Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Dr. Maureen Piribonemi Tamuno, presented her credentials to ISA Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, during a ceremony held at ISA’s Headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica.
H.E. Dr. Tamuno expressed her country’s appreciation for the opportunity to represent the African Group as Vice-President of the 26th Session of ISA’s Council and Assembly. She also stated that “Nigeria is committed to strengthening and consolidating its partnership with ISA for the development of deep-sea mineral resources, marine scientific research and technology, as well as for the training and capacity-building of developing countries in these fields”.
“It is a pleasure to welcome High Commissioner Tamuno as new Permanent Representative of Nigeria to ISA,” Mr. Lodge said during the ceremony. “I am confident that under her leadership and with the ongoing support of Nigeria, ISA will continue to deliver against the objectives assigned to it by UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement particularly with a view to ensuring the effective participation of developing States in activities carried out in the Area,” he added.
Dr. Tamuno is the High Commissioner of Nigeria to Jamaica with concurrent accreditation to Belize, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. She is currently a Member of the Board of Nigeria Railway Corporation. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Tamuno was the Chief Executive Officer of Reens Nigeria Limited (2015-2019) and the Chairperson of the Ogu/Bolo Local Government Council (2011-2014). Previous assignments also include Nigeria’s Representative to the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (2009-2011) and Member of Rivers State House of Assembly (2007-2011).
Ms. Tamuno holds a PhD in Marketing from the Ebonyi State University, Abakiliki, Nigeria and an MBA from the Abubakar Tawafa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria.
