On International Women’s Day, the Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is excited to present a new educational tool where children aged 4-12 can learn about the wonders of the deep sea.
The activity “Discover the seabed with Olivia” involves coloring pages featuring ISA deep-sea scientist Dr. Olivia, who takes us onboard her submarine as she explores the deep sea. Each chapter of this coloring book aims to engage young audiences on the complex issues surrounding the management of 54 per cent of the world’s ocean seabed. The objective is to sensitize children on the important role that science plays in support of the precautionary approach and responsible management of the global commons and the role that women and girls could play in this endeavor.
The Wakatoon app brings the colored drawings to life in a two-minute video available in the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).
This new initiative contributes towards ISA’s mission to increase deep-sea literacy and general awareness of the deep sea, the international seabed area, its mineral resources and the unique legal regime in place to manage them with precaution for the benefit of all humanity.
The Wakatoon app is accessible from anywhere in the world.

Please share a video of your children and their schoolmates using the Wakatoon app and ISA coloring pages. We promise to feature it on our website!
