On 16 August 2022, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of three (3) candidates for on-land training opportunities provided by the Government of Poland in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides with ISA.
The selected candidates are:
- Ms. Toni-Ann Miller from Jamaica
- Ms. Mayin-jesu D. Ehinlaiye from Nigeria
- Mr. Eric Awuah Yeboah from Ghana
The selected candidates will engage in six (6) weeks training in the field of deep-sea marine minerals to equip them with skills and competences necessary for the integration, processing and analysis of material and data collected during the research cruises.
The training programme will be organized by the Poland Polish Geological Institute-National Research Institute, Warsaw, Poland in cooperation with: Natural Sciences Education and Research Centre, University of Szczecin, Poland; Interoceanmetal, Szczecin, Poland; and the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, Czech Republic. Candidates will therefore travel to both countries in order to complete the training.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund practical training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA, including the participation of such personnel in all activities in the Area which are covered by the contract.
The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of exploration contracts signed with ISA.
