The International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources of China are pleased to announce the third training workshop organized by the ISA-China Joint Training and Research Centre (JTRC) between 23 and 27 April 2025.

The ISA-China Joint Training and Research Centre (ISA-China JTRC) was established following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2019. Its purpose is to support ISA’s responsibilities in capacity-building and marine scientific research. Since its inception, over 70 participants from developing States have benefited from two training workshops organized under the framework of the Action Plan for Marine Scientific Research in support of the UN Decade for Ocean Science.

The ISA-China JTRC is pleased to announce its third training workshop, titled “Advancing Marine Spatial Planning in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction for Sustainable Deep-Sea Stewardship: Best Practices and Key Insights from the REMP Process.”

The workshop is targeted at nationals from developing States that are practitioners and scientific advisors of ISA Member States and have at least a basic technical understanding of spatial planning or deep-sea environments.

The programme of the third ISA-China JTRC training workshop includes an introduction to the REMP process in the context of ISA’s mandate, along with concepts, tools, and methodologies used in spatial planning. It will also cover key scientific approaches and demonstrate how spatial planning supports the REMP process. Participants will engage in group exercises and explore case studies applied to priority regions and include a visit to the China Deep Sea Research Centre, followed by a group assignment and evaluation.

The call for nominations of participants is open until 24 January 2025. Please visit this link for more information on the nomination process and eligibility criteria. A limited number of placements are available and the selection will be conducted by the Steering Committee of the ISA-China JTRC.

In light of ISA’s commitment towards women empowerment and leadership in deep-sea research, qualified women applicants are encouraged to apply. Candidates from least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States are also strongly encouraged to apply.
