The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is calling for expressions of interest from government representatives from African countries, members of ISA, for a two-month secondment with the Organization to advance geological and ocean policy activities.
The secondment is being offered as part of the joint Voluntary Commitment made by ISA and the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) of the Africa Union at the 2017 UN Ocean Conference in New York, to promote the sustainable development of Africa’s deep seabed resources in support of Africa’s Blue Economy (#OceanAction16374). This project has since received the financial support of the Government of Norway (NORAD).
This commitment is being operationalized through the Africa’s Deep-Seabed Resources (ADSR) Project, which aims to strengthen the technical capacity of national experts from African countries in relation to activities undertaken in the international deep-seabed Area.
Over the course of the ADSR Project, ISA will provide ten (10) official representatives of African countries, members of ISA, including at least five (5) women, with secondment opportunities.
The aim of the secondments is to build on existing capacity-building initiatives to provide national experts with technical skills on deep-seabed related matters, and enable the ISA Secretariat to benefit from the contribution of experts to advance specific tasks identified in partnership with the Legal and Technical Commission (LTC).
ISA is seeking applications from candidates that meet the following selection criteria:
Profile: must be a full-time employee of the releasing organization at the time of appointment and continue to receive their salary and benefits during the time of the secondment from that organization. Interns will not be considered.
Education: Relevant degree in geoscience (geology, geochemistry, geophysics – marine geoscience will be considered as an added advantage) and/or policy studies.
Experience: Mid-career professional with a proven track-record of experience and achievement in resources assessment, resources management or ocean policy and the Blue Economy.
Language: Good knowledge of English or French for daily conversion, reading and writing.
Age: be between 32 and 48 years.
