Applications are now open for training opportunities for candidates from developing States with the China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association (COMRA) as part of the International Seabed Authority (ISA)’s contractor training programme.

ISA is calling for candidates with Bachelor or Master’s Degrees in Science (geology, geophysics, biology or environment) or Engineering (marine, mining, mechanical or electrical) to participate in COMRA’s fellowship and engineering training programmes Qingdao and Changsha, China.

In accordance with COMRA’s exploration contract for polymetallic nodules, COMRA is offering:

  • Three training fellowships from mid-October 2020 to January 2021.
  • Four mining engineering placements from mid-October to November 2020.
  • Three processing engineering placements from mid-October to November 2020.

As part of its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides, COMRA is also offering:

  • Two training fellowships from mid-October 2020 to January 2021.
  • Two engineering placements from mid-October to November 2020.

Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

The contractor training programme is a legal obligation for contractors. Such obligation is further detailed in article 15 of Annex III of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and in the Regulations adopted by ISA relating to prospecting and exploration.

Between 2013 and 2019, more than 100 placements (45% of women) have been awarded as part of the contractor training programme, including: at-sea training, Master and PhD programmes, dredging seminars, taxonomy workshops, engineering courses, legal fellowships and internships.
