2021 session branding 2

The Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) adopted on 30 March a decision to extend by one-year the terms of office of the current members of the Legal and Technical Commission (LTC), such that they will expire on 31 December 2022.

This decision was made on an exceptional basis, owing to the unprecedented circumstances arising as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which impeded progress on the on-going negotiations on the mechanism to govern the next elections of LTC members.

The LTC is a body of 30 experts nominated by members of ISA and elected by the Council to serve in their individual capacity. The composition and the size of the LTC are still under discussion and the Council has invited the facilitator of the negotiations, Mr. Vladislav Kurbatskiy from the Russian Federation, to resume his consultations at the next in-person meeting scheduled in July 2021 with a view of taking a decision at that meeting.

The election of LTC members for the period 2023-2027 would then be expected to take place at the following Council meetings in July 2022, with members starting their term of office on 1 January 2023.
