Blue Minerals Jamaica Limited (BMJ), in accordance with its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules signed with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2021, is offering twelve (12) at-sea on-board training opportunities to candidates from developing States within its 2023 training programme.
General Description:
The training placements are divided as follows:
- Four (4) geotechnical-based training placements wherein trainees will focus on the collection and conservation of geotechnical samples.
- Four (4) biology-based training placements wherein the trainees will focus on the collection and conservation of marine/biological samples.
- Four (4) geophysical/geochemical-based training placements wherein trainees will focus on the collection and conservation of geophysical/geochemical samples.
The duration of the training will be approximately 6 to 10 weeks in Q4 of 2023. (Dates may be subject to change, candidates will be provided with as much prior notice as possible). The training will occur onboard the Hidden Gem vessel with the port of call in Manzanillo, Mexico. The cruise will be organised by Allseas Group S.A., a world-leading contractor in the offshore energy market. As experts in the design and execution of large and complex offshore projects, Allseas Group S.A. is constantly pushing the boundaries of technology. Trainees will join the Allseas’ team of experts as they journey to the BMJ contact area in Clarion-Clipperton Zone.
Qualification Requirements
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Education:
- Four (4) candidates with a qualified bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field of geotechnology or an equivalent educational background.
- Four (4) candidates with a qualified bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field of marine biotechnology or an equivalent educational background.
- Four (4) candidates with a qualified bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field of geophysical/geochemical technology or an equivalent educational background.
- Experience: At least one year of practical experience in the candidate’s field of specialisation.
- Language: A sound knowledge of the English language, attested by a certificate, if the language of study was not English.
- Health: Good mental and physical health suitable for work at sea.
- Age: must be under 45 years of age.
- If selected, the trainee will be required to submit a physical examination report, signed by a licensed physician, stating that the trainee is physically fit for a month-long on-board training.
Trainees shall sign a confidentiality agreement with BMJ and will receive certificates on completion of the training. A report on the outcome of the training is also to be submitted to BMJ and ISA.
Cost Bearing:
In addition to covering all costs directly associated with the training, BMJ undertakes to cover trainees’ travel expenses to and from training site[s], accommodation, meals, and any other incidental expenses that might arise during the training period.

One of the Voluntary Commitments registered by ISA at the 2017 UN Ocean Conference (#OceanAction 40768). and reiterated in 2022 was ‘Enhancing the role of Women in Marine Scientific Research through Capacity Building’ – As partner of the Women in Deep-Sea Research (WIDSR) project, BMJ has pledged to allocate 50% of the training opportunities to qualified women applicants.
