The International Seabed Authority in partnership with the Government of the Republic of South Africa and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom is organising a multi-stakeholder workshop on the “Development of Standards and Guidelines for the mining code” on 13 to 17 May in Pretoria, South Africa.
This workshop will be divided into two parts. The first part will be from 13-15 May and will feature presentations and panel discussions focused on drawing up a list of performance and procedure-related standards relevant to activities in the International Seabed Area (the Area). One of the expected outcomes of the workshop is also to establish a process for the development of standards for exploitation activities in the Area. The second part of the Workshop will be held from 16-17 May, which would be a smaller working group meeting tasked with the responsibility of drafting the report of the workshop.
The workshop promises to garner participation from a wide range of experts from Member States; Members of the Legal and Technical Commission; Contractors of the International Seabed Authority; observers from Non-Governmental organisations and Intergovernmental organisations.
