MOF-ROK-PMS

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (MOF-ROK) pursuant to its contract for the exploration for polymetallic sulphides signed with ISA on 24 June 2014 is offering four (4) at-sea on-board training placements to candidates from developing States under its revised 2023 training programme.

The cruise will be organized by Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) within the MOF-ROK contract area in the Indian Ocean mid-ocean ridge using R/V Isabu. The cruise will be divided into two legs and the four training opportunities will be offered as follows:

  1. two (2) training placements during the first leg which will take place in March 2023 for approximately 25 days onboard. The exploration will focus on geophysical survey such as acquisition and processing of topography and geomagnetic data. Candidates with a background and interest in marine geophysics are encouraged to apply.
  2. two (2) placements on the second leg which is planned for April 2023 for approximately 25 days focusing on marine geology and environmental baseline study such as exploration of massive sulphide deposits, benthic and pelagic environmental survey, deep-sea sampling equipment and instrumentation, and sample analysis.

The exact dates for both cruises are to be confirmed in late 2022 (subject to change due to pandemic situation) and candidates will be provided with as much prior notice as possible.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

1. Education:

a. two (2) candidates for the first leg with a qualified bachelor or master's degree in the field marine geophysics or an equivalent educational background.

b. two (2) candidates for the second leg with a qualified bachelor or master's degree in the field of marine geology or marine environmental studies or an equivalent educational background.

2. Language: sufficient knowledge of English attested by a certificate as required.

3. Health: proof of being in good mental and physical health.

4. Age: must be under 45 years of age.

5. If selected, the trainee will be required to submit a physical examination report, signed by licensed physician, stating that the trainee is physically fit for a month-long on-board training.  

Trainees must sign a confidentiality agreement with MOF-ROK and will receive certificates on successful completion of the training. A report on the outcome of the training is also to be submitted to MOF-ROK and ISA.

MOF-ROK will cover all the relevant costs including: i) transportation costs (round-trip economy class) accrued by trainees pursuant to their participation in the training programme; ii) accommodations and meals; iii) medical insurance; and iv) other incidental expenses that might arise during the training period.

Applications should be submitted not later than 31 August 2022 either through:

(i)     The online training portal.  Users applying through the online portal, must upload a copy of a passport photo, the signed nomination, degree / certificates and résumé; or

(ii)    Email, in one of the two working languages (English or French) of ISA Secretariat, to training@isa.org.jm using the correct forms below.

  • Application form (docx | pdf) to be completed by the applicant;
  • Nomination form (docx | pdf) to be completed by the institution or governmental department; 
  • Copy of Degree and other relevant Certificates;
  • Proof of English;
  • Copy of CV or Résumé.
