One (1) internship for candidates of developing states in accordance with its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides with the International Seabed Authority. The internships will take place within the deep-sea ecosystems studies laboratory of Ifremer, in Brest, for a duration of two months (approximately from May to the end of June 2018).
The objective of the internships will be to acquire practical knowledge of deep ocean environmental studies and more specific knowledge on the life cycle of deep-sea species, and to develop skills in population biology, reproductive biology as well as in morphological and molecular taxonomy. The specific objectives and activities of the internship will be the study of the reproductive characteristics of a vent endemic species, the shrimp Rimicaris exoculata from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Detailed description: Life cycles of deep-sea species remain poorly understood despite the recognition that this knowledge gap is critical to evaluate the resilience of benthic communities facing potential mining impacts. The deep sea shrimp Rimicaris exoculata, widely distributed and very abundant on several hydrothermal vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is an interesting model of study to understand some of the key steps of the life of organisms inhabiting hydrothermal vent ecosystems such as larval dispersal, post larval settlement, reproduction or symbiont acquisition. Recent results in our laboratory suggest seasonal reproduction in this species with specific distribution patterns of sexes and life-stages, perhaps driven by environmental factors. Repeated sampling in 2014, 2017 and 2018 will bring observations for inter-annual comparisons, allowing detailed understanding of reproductive timing, and of the influence of environmental factors o reproduction and colonization by post-larval stages of this species.
