JAMAICA, Kingston (24 July 2018) - -Canada and the International Seabed Authority today co-hosted a side event on Enhancing the Role of Women in Deep-Sea Marine Scientific Research through Focused Capacity-Building Initiatives to Achieve the Goals and Targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Although numerous initiatives have been adopted and implemented at global, regional and national levels to ensure opportunities for women in non-traditional science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sectors, the participation of women remain low.
JAMAICA, Kingston (23 July 2018) - - On 23 July 2018, the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Mr Michael Lodge, presented the inaugural edition of the ISA Secretary-General’s Award for Excellence in Deep Sea Research at the 24th session of the Assembly of the Authority.
The Secretary-General’s Award for Excellence in Deep Sea Research is one of seven Voluntary Commitments officially registered by the International Seabed Authority at the UN Ocean conference that was held in New York in June 2017 (#OceanAction15796).
JAMAICA, Kingston (23 July 2018) - - Professor Mariusz-Orion Jędrysek of Poland was elected President of the International Seabed Authority Assembly for the 24th Session. He succeeds Mr Eugénio Muianga of Mozambique.
Mr Jędrysek is Secretary of State and Chief National Geologist and Deputy Minister of Environment of Poland. He is also Government Plenipotentiary, National Mineral Policy of Poland and member of Sejm, Parliament Lower Chamber.
JAMAICA, Kingston (17 July 2018) - - The China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) and the International Seabed Authority (ISA), today, co-hosted a side event on the First Steps in Developing and Implementing Regional Environmental Management Plans (REMPs) in the North Pacific and North Atlantic.
JAMAICA, Kingston (17 July 2018) - - The Chair of the Legal & Technical Commission, Ms Michelle Walker provided a report on the joint meeting to Council today, at its 239th meeting of the 24th Session.
Ms Walker said the joint meeting between the two organs was very timely and recommended that the process be a regular one so that both organs kept each other updated on the progress made in relation to the development of the draft regulations on exploitation of mineral resources in the Area.
JAMAICA, Kingston (16 July 2018) - - The Secretariat today, presented its Data Management Strategy, the development of its database and its data web portal to member States during its 24th session meetings currently being held in Kingston.
The Secretariat also outlined the progress made in the transition to the training and policy development phase of the strategy.
JAMAICA, Kingston (16 July 2018) - - The second part of the ISA 24th Session Council meetings presided over by Ambassador Olav Myklebust of Norway, began today in Kingston.
The meeting featured a presentation to Council by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) expert, Richard Roth, on the work relating to the development of a financial model for the Authority.
