On 10 March 2023, Mr. Jinwook Kim presented his credentials to the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, as the Permanent Representative of Korea to ISA during a ceremony held in Kingston, Jamaica.

Mr. Kim is the Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Jamaica. A career diplomat, Mr. Kim joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea in 1995. Before his appointment, Mr. Kim was deputy chief of mission at the Korean Embassy in Israel. He also traveled on diplomatic postings to China, India, Japan, Pakistan and the USA.

During the ceremony, Mr. Kim stressed that he expected the work with ISA to be productive and fruitful during his tenure. “Korea is dedicated to practical cooperation with ISA and its ongoing negotiations on the draft exploitation regulations,” he said. “Korea is willing to contribute to various funds and promote collaborative projects with ISA to advance the shared interests of humanity during this exciting epoch for the international organization tasked with managing the Area’s resources as the common heritage of humankind,” he added.

“I wish to thank Korea for its ongoing support to ISA and the effective implementation of the mandate assigned to ISA by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1994 Agreement. The many initiatives developed in the last few years because of the support provided by Korea, including the organization of international workshops for the development of regional environmental management plans, taxonomic standardization and capacity development, are a testament to the importance of the vitality of our partnership. I personally look forward to consolidating it further,” Secretary-General Lodge said.
