China, Togo and seven international research and exploration entities join the ISA in a Call for Action in support of science, technology and innovation for the stewardship of the Area and its resources for the benefit of all humanity

Kingston, Jamaica—18 June 2024 – The Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) welcomes the signing of the Global Call for Action to ensure the stewardship of the Area and its resources for the benefit of all humanity through deep-sea science, technology and innovation. The call for action has been supported by China, Togo, the National Oceanography Centre of the United Kingdom, the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries of Egypt and five exploration contractors, the Global Sea Mineral Resources NV, Loke CCZ, Nauru Ocean Resources Incorporated, Ocean Mineral Singapore Pte. Ltd. and Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd. 

ISA Secretary-General presents 2024 Annual Report “Leading precautionary and responsible governance of the ocean global commons based on science, solidarity and transparency”

Kingston, Jamaica – 19 June 2024 – The Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, is pleased to present his annual report for 2024, marking ISA’s 30th anniversary. The annual report, titled “Leading precautionary and responsible governance of the ocean global commons based on science, solidarity and transparency,” is submitted as per Article 166(4) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

ISA international experts workshop progresses the development of a scientific approach for the identification of deep-sea taxa in support of effective protection and management measures in the Area

Kingston, Jamaica – On 6 June 2024, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK), successfully concluded a four-day workshop on developing a scientific approach to identifying key deep-sea taxa for the protection of the environment in the Area. This workshop marks the fifth successful edition of a workshop series to advance deep-sea taxonomic standardization under ISA’s Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI).

New York, 12 June 2024—The Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is pleased to announce the release of a new independent report, “A review of the contribution of the International Seabed Authority to the implementation of the objectives of the 2023 Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.” The report details the role of ISA and its potential contribution to the objectives of the 2023 Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdictions.

ISA concludes successful data management review and reporting template training sessions

Kingston, Jamaica – Friday, 7 June 2024, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of its recent Data Management Review and Reporting Template Training Sessions. Held over a series of five one-week sessions at the ISA headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, these sessions brought together data managers and scientific experts from various contractor organizations to enhance their understanding and utilization of the DeepData platform and reporting templates.
