ISA launches pioneering new report on the status of women scientists from LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS in deep-sea research

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) launched a pioneering report, “Empowering Women from LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS in Deep-Sea Research,” on 30 June at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. The report provides detailed information resulting from the first ever gender mapping undertaken in the field of deep-sea research and related disciplines. The report also identifies the critical barriers faced by women scientists from least developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS) to participate in deep-sea research and related fields and access leadership positions.

ISA Assembly concludes in-person meetings under the 27th session

The 27th session of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) closed on 4 August 2022 after three days of in-person meetings held in Kingston, Jamaica. Some delegations attended the session virtually. The meetings were presided by Mr. Olav Myklebust (Norway), who served as Acting President of the Assembly for the 27th session in the absence of the elected president, H.E. Mr. Satyendra Prasad (Fiji).

ISA Council concludes Part II of its 27th session

The second part of the 27th session of the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) closed on 29 July 2022 after ten days of meetings held in Kingston, Jamaica. A total of 35 of the 36 Members of the Council attended the session in person or virtually; other Members and 14 observers were also in attendance.

The Secretary-General of ISA presents the Annual Report 2022

The Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, is pleased to present the Annual Report 2022 under article 166(4) of the United Nations Convention on the law of the Sea. The report, entitled “Ensuring the sustainable management and stewardship of the deep seabed and its resources for the benefit of humankind”, is aimed at providing the Assembly of ISA with an overview of the activities undertaken by ISA since July 2021.

New Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative launched to advance marine scientific research in the Area

The Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), together with Argentina, South Africa, the European Commission, the Secretariat of the Convention for the Biological Diversity (CBD), the Institut français de recherche pour l’exploitation de la mer (Ifremer, France), the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK), the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) of IOC/UNESCO and the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), launched a new initiative called the “Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI)”.

ISA Legal and Technical Commission announces the selection of one (1) candidate to benefit from L’Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer training opportunity

On 14 July 2022, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of one (1) candidate for an internship opportunity provided by L’Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules with ISA.

On 14 July 2022, the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) confirmed the selection of six (6) candidates for internship opportunities provided by L’Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) in accordance with its obligations under its exploration contract for polymetallic sulphides with ISA.
