The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has opened a Call for nominations for the Secretary-General’s Award for Excellence in Deep-Sea Research, open until 11 April 2025.
Launched at the ISA Assembly in July 2018, the Award recognizes and encourages the achievements of young researchers from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to advancing scientific knowledge of the deep-sea environment or developing environmentally sustainable regulatory frameworks. This unique initiative has been supported by Monaco since 2018.
The annual Award is intended to recognize and encourage the achievements of young researchers (under 45 years of age) from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to advancing scientific knowledge of the deep-sea environment or developing environmentally sustainable regulatory frameworks.
The Awardee will receive a cash prize of USD4,000 and other benefits, including a three-month fellowship in a relevant office of ISA in Kingston, costs of participation in one of ISA’s workshops on matters of expertise and costs of publication fees of an article written by Awardee in a scientific journal (open access).
The Secretary-General’s Award is one of the voluntary commitments made by ISA during the United Nations Ocean Conference in 2017 and renewed in 2022 to advance the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources (#OceanAction40845).
Nominations and supporting documents should be submitted to sgaward@isa.org.jm on or before 11 April 2025. Details about eligibility criteria and nomination procedure are available here.
