His Excellency Dong Xiaojun, newly appointed Ambassador of China to Jamaica, presented his credentials as the new Permanent Representative of China to the International Seabed Authority to the Secretary-General on Wednesday, 23 October 2013.
Whilst Ambassador Dong has served his country in the USA, Gambia, and Afghanistan, he is no stranger to the Caribbean. He enjoyed a four year term as Councillor at the Chinese Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago from 2001 – 2004.
China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) of the People’s Republic of China has signed two contracts with the Authority for the exploration of polymetallic nodules and polymetallic sulphides. A third contract will be signed in the near future for the exploration of ferromanganese crusts.
China is represented on the two subsidiary bodies of the Authority – the Legal and Technical Commission and the Finance Committee.
