KINGSTON JAMAICA, 18 May 2011 - - The International Seabed Authority will hold elections for its Finance Committee during its 17th Session in July.

Nominations have been received from 15 countries as follows:

InterRidge (IR) a non-profit organisation concerned with promoting all aspects of mid-ocean ridge research (their study, use and protection) which can be achieved by international cooperation has announced its partnership with the International Seabed Authority Endowment Fund for the Interidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for 2009-2011.

The Assembly of the International Seabed Authority yesterday (24 July) concluded its consideration of the Secretary-General’s annual report in Kingston this morning hearing comments from twelve delegations and three observers on many aspects of its topics.

Secretary-General Nii Allotey Odunton (Ghana), presented the report which covers the work of the Authority since the last session, to the Assembly yesterday.  It was the highlight of the 166-member body’s agenda during its twentieth anniversary session.

JAMAICA, Kingston (29 June 2015)  - - His Excellency, Mr. Carlos Alberto Michaelsen Den Hartog presented his credentials to the Secretary-General of the Authority on Wednesday, 24 June 2015 as the new Permanent Representative of Brazil.

JAMAICA, Kingston (3 May 2016) - - The Authority's 22nd Annual Session will be held in Kingston, Jamaica from 11-22 July 2016. The Session will be preceded by meetings of the Legal and Technical Commission and the Finance Committee from 4-8 July.

JAMAICA, Kingston (21 February 2017) - - The Legal and Technical Commission officially opened its meeting session today following an informal workshop and training session held yesterday, 20 February 2017. 

The informal workshop was held to familiarize the new members with the working methods of the Commission, the work of the Authority, and also covered the work of the Commission over the last five years.

JAMAICA, Kingston (14 November 2017) - - The International Seabed Authority has engaged with the Pew Seabed Mining Project in several areas including partnerships in relation to workshops in environmental matters held in Berlin and a workshop in Uganda earlier this year – the first to be held in a landlocked developing country.

Speaking at Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, on Tuesday 13 November 2017, ISA Secretary-General Michael Lodge paid tribute to the very constructive engagement between Pew and the Authority. 

JAMAICA, Kingston (4 July 2018) - - Dr. Kathy-Ann Brown today, presented her Credentials to Secretary-General Michael Lodge, as the Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the International Seabed Authority.

Dr. Brown is the Deputy Solicitor, International Affairs Division in the Attorney General's Chambers. Her main areas of responsibility include the law of the sea, environmental law, international security issues, international trade law, Caribbean Community law, law of international organisations, human rights and air policy.

The International Seabed Authority is calling for nominations for two short-term training opportunities in 2013-2014 for suitable candidates from developing States provided by the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

The ISA training programme is pursuant to the terms of contract for exploration for polymetallic nodules between the BGR and the Authority .

KINGSTON, JAMAICA, 13 July 2012 - - The adoption of draft Regulations on prospecting and exploration for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts; consideration of five new applications for approval of plans of work for exploration and election of 20 members of Council and of the Secretary-General are among substantive issues for consideration on the agenda of the International Seabed Authority when it convenes its 18th Session in Kingston, Jamaica from 16-27 July 2012.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA 11 December 2010 - - The adoption at the sixteenth session of the Authority of the regulations for prospecting and exploration for polymetallic sulphides was  an important achievement for the Authority made possible by the positive commitment shown by member States in concluding the negotiations on the draft regulations.

Environmental, commercial mining and scientific interests in deep-sea areas may seem to be at odds, but the International Seabed Authority’s Endowment Fund shows the alliance as a successful model for sustainable use of ocean resources.

On 11 September 2014, a Chinese delegation headed by Mr. Jiancai Jin, Secretary General, China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association of the People’s Republic of China (COMRA), visited the headquarters of the International Seabed Authority.

The delegation was composed of officials from the National People’s Congress of China and the China Institute for Marine Affairs.

JAMAICA, Kingston (16 July 2015) - - Procedures and criteria for extending contracts for exploration for marine minerals in the seabed Area due to expire soon, were highlighted in the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) on the third day of its Twenty-First session in Kingston (15 July).
