ANNOUNCEMENT

Applications are now open for six (6) at-sea on-board training opportunities for candidates from developing States, Members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The placements are provided by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (MOF-ROK) in accordance with its obligations under both its contracts for exploration for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (CFC) and polymetallic sulphides (PMS) with ISA.

ANNOUNCEMENT

On 21 June 2022, Dr. Raijeli L. Taga (Fiji), facilitator of the informal working group on the protection and preservation of the marine environment established by the ISA Council, will host a webinar to discuss the Environmental Compensation Fund for activities in the Area.

The webinar will take place from 8:00 to 9:30 AM, Jamaica time and will be accessible to registered participants only.

The International Seabed Authority - China Joint Training and Research Center (ISA-China JTRC) successfully closed its first training workshop, which focused on survey and assessment of mineral resources, characteristics of deep-sea ecosystems and environmental management, and the global repository of data from exploration activities in the Area.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is seeking comments on the draft regional environmental management plan (REMP) for the area of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a focus on polymetallic sulphide deposits.

The draft REMP for the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge was prepared by ISA’s Legal and Technical Commission (LTC). It draws on the outcomes from three expert workshops (Poland in 2018, Portugal in 2019 and virtual in 2020) and comprehensive sets of scientific information and data.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources of China are pleased to announce the first training workshop organized by the ISA-China Joint Training and Research Centre (JTRC) between 24 and 27 May 2022.

The workshop will contribute to enhancing the capacity of national experts from developing States Members of ISA, especially professionals from least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States.

The first part of the 27th session of the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) closed on 1 April 2022 after ten days of meetings held in Kingston, Jamaica. All 36 Members of the Council attended the session in person or virtually; other Members and 15 Observers were also in attendance.

The ISA Council meetings focused on the draft Regulations on exploitation of mineral resources in the Area.
