The deadline to apply for one at-sea (engineering) training opportunity provided by Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI) for candidates from developing States Members of ISA has been extended to 31 January 2022.

The placement is being offered in accordance with NORI’s obligations under its contracts with ISA for exploration of polymetallic nodules. Following the extended application deadline of 27 September 2021, only one placement was filled while the other was recommended for re-advertisement by the Legal and Technical Commission.

This second opportunity will mobilize in Mexico for the Pacific testing of NORI’s nodule collection and riser system. The exploration campaign will take place from June to August 2022. The intern will be assigned tasks and responsibilities based on their experience and capabilities. NORI’s objective is to provide the candidate with a unique learning experience in a new and exciting field. The trainee is expected to be an active contributor to the programme.

This training opportunity is a direct contribution of NORI to ISA’s “Women in Deep-Sea Research” (WIDSR) Project. The Contractor has committed to allocate at least half of its overall training placements to women candidates.

Please visit this link for more information and to apply to the training. Applications by qualified candidates should be received no later than 31 January 2022.

All contractors with ISA have a legal obligation to provide and fund training opportunities for personnel from developing States and those of ISA.

The legal basis for the requirement stems from the provisions of UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement and is set out in the standard terms of contracts. Its purpose is to ensure that personnel from developing States are provided with appropriate operational expertise to enable them to participate in deep-seabed mining.
