The World Maritime University (WMU) and the International Seabed Authority (ISA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their cooperation with a view, among other things, to advance achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14. The focus is on improving education and capacity-building initiatives in marine science.
The Beijing Pioneer Hi-Tech Development Corporation (BPHDC) has applied to the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for approval of a plan of work for the exploration of polymetallic nodules in the Western Pacific Ocean.
Polymetallic nodules contain nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese, which are subject of increasing interest with the rise of green energy technologies required for a low-carbon future.
Nominations are now open for the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Secretary-General’s Award for Excellence in Deep Sea Research.
Launched at the ISA Assembly in July 2018, the Award recognizes and encourages the achievements of young researchers from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the deep-sea environment, or to the development of environmentally sustainable regulatory frameworks.
Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Mr. Michael Lodge today welcomed H.E. Lumka Yengeni, as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Africa to ISA.
Ambassador Yengeni was recently appointed as High Commissioner-designate of South Africa to Jamaica, and has been a Member of Parliament of South Africa's National Assembly since 2004. She is also an active member of the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's ruling party.
At the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York this week, Mr. Michael Lodge Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) highlighted the organization's efforts towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development over the last year, and welcomed the Assembly’s acknowledgement of ISA’s key role in advancing Goal 14 on sustainable oceans.

JAMAICA, Kingston (16 July 2018) - - The Secretariat today, presented its Data Management Strategy, the development of its database and its data web portal to member States during its 24th session meetings currently being held in Kingston.
The Secretariat also outlined the progress made in the transition to the training and policy development phase of the strategy.
The Advisory Panel of the ISA Endowment Fund will hold its 11th meeting in Kingston today.
The 7-member Panel, appointed by the Secretary-General includes permanent representatives of the Authority, educational institutions, international organisations and invidividuals closely associated with the work of the Authority evaluates all applications for assistance from the Fund.
The ISA Endowment Fund is inviting applications from suitable candidates interested in being sponsored to attend the 18th Session of the Rhodes Academy of the Oceans Law and Policy meetings held June 30 - July 20, 2013 in Greece.
The deadline for applications is May 1, 2013
H.E. Mr Hiroshi Yamaguchi, presented his credentials to the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority on Tuesday 22 May 2012.
Ambassador Yamaguchi has enjoyed a distinguished foreign-service career with many postings to Europe, South America, the USA and the Caribbean. He was the Head of Delegation of Japan for the Authority’s 16th and 17th annual sessions.
InterRidge announced the recipients of its 2010 Fellowship Programme today.
The three awards made this year included one from InterRidge and two provided from the International Seabed Authority Endowment Fund.
The InterRidge fellowship will allow Shinsuke Kawagucci, a postdoctoral researcher at JAMSTEC, Japan to develop international links, as well as giving him opportunities to expand the interdisciplinary nature of his research.
The ISA will host a presentation on its Endowment Fund on Wednesday 30 April in Conference Room 5 of the UN headquarters in New York from 1:15 - 2:30pm.
The Endowment Fund encourages and hopes to expand scientific research along the international seabed area and within the deep-sea environment.

JAMAICA, Kingston (17 July 2015) - - The Council of the International Seabed Authority meeting in Kingston yesterday elected its four vice-presidents for the twenty-first session.
The vice presidents are: Brazil, for the Latin American and Caribbean Group; Germany for the Western European and Others Group; Nigeria for the African Group and Poland for the Eastern European Group.
